Calling all artists: FNA Logo Design Contest

The Fishtown Neighbors Association is holding a contest to design a logo for use on its website and printed materials. The winning entry will receive a $100 cash prize as well as a free tree for planting on the winner's sidewalk. Entries must contain the words Fishtown Neighbors Association and www.fishtownlife.com within the design. The rest is up to your creativity. E-mail entries to fna@fishtownlife.com. Entries will be accepted through the summer with a deadline of September 5th at 5pm. Three finalists will be selected for judging at the September general meeting on September 19th, 2008.

Winners of the FNA Planter Contest

The winners of the FNA Beautification Committee's Planter Contest were announced at June's FNA general membership meeting. The decision was pretty tough, so a special thanks to our judge & sponsor, Mary Costello (owner, City Planter).

The winners of "Best Planter" & "Best Window Box" both received a $50 gift certificate to Greensgrow Farms and a $15 off coupon to City Planter. The "Best Overall" winner received a $50 gift certificate to City Planter and a $50 gas card provided by Eagle One Credit Union.

A special thanks to our sponsors; City Planter, Greensgrow Farms, and Eagle One Credit Union, for their generous support and their help in making this contest a success!!

Also, thank you to all of the gardeners who entered either themselves or their neighbors. We got such a great response, and all of the gardens were so beautiful, that we're going to try this contest again next year!! Thanks again, and happy planting!

FNA Works - June Clean-up

This month's FNA Works clean-up will be: Saturday, June 28th!! We will meet at the Fishtown Rec Center at 10:00am and will be tackling the lot on the corner of Girard & Berks. Suggestions for any other areas that might need a little TLC from the community are always accepted. Time's Running Out to nominate your favorite neighborhood gardner (or yourself) for the FNA Beautification Committee's Planter Contest!!! Deadline for Submissions: Thursday, June 12th!! Please read below... Show Off Your Green Thumb Fishtown!!! Do you or your neighbor have a green thumb? FNA Beautification committee will be sponsoring a Container garden competition beginning May 15th! It is free to submit an entry. City Planter, Greensgrow Farms, New Kensington Community Development Center, and other garden centers are sponsoring the event by giving $50 gift certificates to the finalists. The rules are simple�The owner of the container garden must live in Fishtown [FNA Boundaries as defined by the by-laws are as follows: Delaware River to Laurel Street, Laurel to Front Street, Front to Norris Street, Norris to Trenton Avenue, Trenton to Frankford Avenue, Frankford to York Street, York to the Delaware River]. The container must be at least the size of a window box and no bigger than a bath tub. There are 2 divisions � �Window Box� Gardeners and �Container / Street Planter� Gardeners � with a 1st and 2nd place prize being awarded in each division. You can enter yourself or one of your neighbors by e-mailing your name or the gardener�s name, address, phone numer and the division you wish to enter by June 12th to: fnabeautification@yahoo.com. You can also submit your own photos as attachments in the email. Please be sure to include �FNA Planter Contest� in the subject of the email. An FNA member will contact the entrant to photograph the garden for judging. The FNA's next monthly general meeting will be held at the Fishtown Rec Center on Thursday, May 15th, 2008. In addition to new business, the following items are on the agenda:

The Elm Tree Post will be on hand to retire the flag in the large meeting room of the Rec Center. If you have a flag that needs to be retired, please bring it..
Historian Ken Milano will speak about his new book, Remembering Kensington and Fishtown. Copies of the book will be for sale.
Updates from the newly re-formed Beautification Committee about some of their new initiatives, including a planter contest.

Be sure to join us starting at 6:30 to mingle with your neighbors over cookies.

Recycling Reminder: Fishtown Recycles program is over and single stream is coming

Just a reminder that the Fishtown Recycles program ended on Saturday, May 3rd. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped Fishtown recycle approximately 100 tons of material during the last four years. Thank you also to the Streets Department employees who worked with us each month.

Starting on May 16th, Fishtown will be part of the city's single-stream recycling program, and residents will be able to recycle plastic containers and cardboard. For more information about single stream recycling in Philadelphia, please visit http://64.78.36.115/res_singlestream.asp.

26th District Police Incidents: 4/20/08 - 5/3/08

The Crime Officer of the 26th district has forwarded the information below to the FNA regarding incidents that occurred in the Fishtown area between 4/20/08 to 5/3/08. There were 2 Robberies:

5/2/08-- On the corner of Front And Girard Ave.
Offender #1 approached victim and struck him from behind with a handgun and the other offenders started kicking and punching him until he fell to the ground, one of the offender's then went into his pockets and removed below items.
Items taken: $250 usc, wallet, various id's cellphone
Offenders: (5) hispanic males, btwn 17-20 y/o, all wearing dark clothing.

5/3/08-- On the corner of York and Cedar Sts
Offenders chased victim and then the offenders took below item
Item taken: (1) scooter

There were 5 Burglaries:

4/20/08-- On the 2500 blk of Norris St.,
Offender entered a property thru rear window and removed below items
Items taken: Sony PS2, Dell Laptop, Apple IPOD, Bike Helmet, (5) DVD's
Offender: unknown at this time.

4/20/08-- On the 400 blk of Sepviva st.
Police observed offenders climbing through window of a residence under construction. Offenders gained access thru rear window, also recovered Blk & Grey hacksaw and blk. NY Yankee hat with gold pin

Offender gained entry to property thru rear door and removed below items

Offenders gained entry to property thru rear door and removed below items

4/20/08-- On the 900 blk of Delaware Ave.
Victim states that she left her vehicle with valet and when she returned she noticed that below items was missing from center console.
Item taken: $380 USC.

4/20/08-- On the 900 blk of Delaware Ave.
An off-duty police officer observed offender trying to break into a 2000 Pontiac Grand-Am that belonged to his sister-in-law, Nothing was taken.
Offender: arrested

4/20/08-- On the 1500 blk of Montgomery Ave.
Offender removed a section of residents iron fencing withou permission.

4/20/08-- On the 1300 blk of Oxford Ave.
Offender was observed inside a 97' Hyndai Esentra by the owner's sister, owner states that no one had permission to be in vehicle.

4/21/08-- On the 2000 Martha St.
Offender broke out the P/S of window of a 99' Volkswagon and removed below items without permission. Offender also attempted to break into a Pontaic on the same blk, damaging door, nothing taken

4/21/08-- On the 2200 blk of Amber St.
Offender broke into a 96' Saturn and removed below items without permission.
Item Taken: keys, veh. paperwork, $15 USC change

Offender broke out the D/S window and removed below items

4/25/08-- On the 2300 blk of Almond St.
Offender broke into a vehicle and removed below items without permission

4/16/08-- ON THE 800 BLK OF EAST GIRARD AVE.
OFFENDER APPROACHED VICTIM FROM BEHIND WHILE IN AN ALLEY AND POINTED A SILVER HANDGUN AND TOLD VICTIM TO GET ON THE GROUND AND REMOVE ITEMS FROM HIS POCKETS. VICTIM COMPLIED, OFFENDER THEN FLED LOCATION IN AN UNKNOWN DIRECTION. VICTIM STATES THAT OFFENDER FOLLOWED HIM FROM THE ATM MACHINE AT 400 E GIRARD AVE.
ITEMS TAKEN: $50 USC, DRIVER'S LICENSE, DEBIT CARD AND (1) CELL PHONE.
OFFENDER: BLACK MALE, 5'10, BLK HOODIE, BLK SWEATPANTS

4/18/08-- IN THE AREA OF SEPVIVA AND NORRIS
OFFENDERS APPROACHED VICTIM WHO WAS WALKING HOME FROM SCHOOL AND THREATENED TO PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE IF HE DID NOT GIVE THEM HIS CELLPHONE. VICTIM COMPLIED, AND OFFENDERS FLED ON FOOT N/B ON SEPVIVA STREET.
ITEM TAKEN: (1) AT&T CELL PHONE MODEL # A437.
OFFENDERS: (4) BLACK MALES, 16-20 Y/O, #1 HAD AN AFRO, AND BEARD WEARING A GREY SHIRT, #2 HAD SHORT HAIR AND WAS CLEAN SHAVEN ALSO WEARING A GREY SHIRT. #3 HAD NO SHIRT ON AND #4 WAS WEARING A WHITE T'SHIRT AND JEANS.

OFFENDER BROKE INTO A PROPERTY BY FORCING BACK DOOR AND REMOVED BELOW ITEMS.

The Crime Officer of the 26th district has forwarded the information below to the FNA regarding incidents that occurred in the Fishtown area between 4/06/08 to 4/12/08. There was 1 Aggravated Assault:

4/6/08-- On the 900 blk of Delaware Ave.
Offender punched victim in the face causing him to lose conscienceness. Victim was transported to Jefferson Hospital.
Offender: B/M, long beard, husky built, wearing a dark color plaid shirt.

There were 2 Burglaries:

4/7/08-- On the 1200 blk of Marlborough Street.
Offender cut the pad lock off a property under construction and entered property and removed below items.
Item Taken: Copper piping.

4/9/08-- On the 2000 blk of Susquehanna Ave.
Offender cut the lock off the rear gate and forced open the side 1st floor window and removed below items without permission.
Items Taken: unknown at this time.

There were 6 Thefts:

4/7/08-- On the 2000 blk of Frankford Ave.
Offender picked up victims purse and left . Victim states that she placed her purse down and when she went to pick it up it was gone.
Items Taken: Purse containing, credit cards, various Id's, checkbook, cell phone, medication.

4/8/08-- On the 1100 blk of Frankford St.
Offender broke into a 06' Chrysler Pacifica thru D/S window and removed below items.
Item taken: (1) Garmen GPS system, (1) IBM Thinkpad M65, (1) Fluke Meter

4/8/08-- On the 2200 blk of 6th St.
Offender went into an unlocked vehicle and removed below items without permission.
Items Taken: (10) various CD'S, (1) Blackberry, (1) partial plate(dentures), various clothing, $120. usc

4/10/08-- On the 1500 blk of Montgomery Av.
Offender removed below item from victims purse

4/11/08-- On the 1500 blk of Mongomery Ave.
Offender removed a Pa License Plate from a 98' Toyota Tacoma

4/11/08-- On the 1300 blk of Frankford Ave.
Offender broke out Drivers side window of a 07' Toyota Prius and removed below items.

Offender removed a 96' Honda Civic From the highway without permission.
